"If I can't dance it is not my revolution"
Jan Martens: Trailer & Quote
"If I can’t dance, it’s not my revolution.”
This quote is attributed to Emma Goldman who wrote:
"I want freedom, the right to self-expression, everybody's right to beautiful, radiant things.”
"My new production any attempt will end in crushed bodies and shattered bones is inspired by protests. Before COVID my research focus was on standing still as an act of rebellion, the idea that maybe we are better off when progress would come to a halt. But then during the creation COVID came and the pandemic started to happen. Coming together with this big group of dancers + dancing together were things that outside of the work environment became forbidden. It had an effect on this new performance. I became aware of how subversive the act of coming together and dancing had become. In contrast to the difficult moments we are experiencing, the performance became a festive celebration of the dancing body, of doing what we are good at, of embracing all those different ways of dancing and being. I wanted to underline the importance of continuity for culture, for dance, for coming together, even when the darkest times hit."
