Get out your smartphone or tablet and start. The Canadian found-object artist, dancer, and choreographer Peter Trosztmer and the American composer Zack Settel expand our perception of reality with the assistance of our smartphones. The concept: to leave customary roles and become players in order to “make” together: and reinvent ourselves "between pixels." We will alter our collective reality, mutually determine where things go, what we see, and within which environments we move about. A walk-in installation with live dance performance.

Peter Trosztmer, the specialist for participative art, relocates into a virtual space that which occurred on an analogue level with his mounted installation #Boxtape, which was presented outside of the Gasteig Cultural Center during the duration of DANCE 2017. Back then, in a sculpture constructed of tape one could sit, climb, swing back and forth, and spin connections. This time Trosztmer and Settel are interested in multiple realities in addition to the delicate shadings of our constructions of reality. In other words, in addition to virtual reality, real reality, augmented reality, and mediated reality, these two artists have their sights set on collective reality. Collective reality as a possibility in virtual realms where for the most part one is usually on the move alone? In the artistic setting of betweenTheDotsBeta one pulls out his or her smartphone or tablet (or use one of ours) and immerses into the virtual world. The roles blur in this artistic setting – users, dancers, choreographers, composers – in playful interaction. New forms of community are created via accessibility, commitment, and inclusion.

The composer Settel, artist-in-residence at La Societé des Arts Technologiques (La SAT) and professor at the University of Montréal, and Trosztmer, who has developed many of his own projects and worked with, among others, Marie Chouinard, create in their world premiere for DANCE 2019 a "game space" of dance, music, and movement, an inclusive audiovisual space where many individuals will perform collectively.

The technological possibilities of augmented reality make the otherwise invisible traces of movement in the space visible. This allows them to be captured and manipulated. These two elements become possible: the visualization of prior movements and the ongoing spatial encounter with the physical manifestations of choreography
