We want to contribute to reducing energy consumption. That’s why our newly programmed website offers an "Energy Saving" feature: With a simple click, all energy-intensive elements such as images and videos are deactivated, leaving only the essential information. In this mode, energy consumption is reduced by up to 90% compared to conventional websites. This feature is particularly useful during the festival when most visitors are primarily interested in practical information (what, where, when, etc.). This measure is inspired by innovative approaches like Minimal Carbon, which reduce unnecessary data traffic and optimize websites for resource efficiency.
In implementing this concept, we were advised by artist and environmental activist Michael Saup, who has extensively explored the energy consumption of digital systems. His work highlights the direct ecological impact of our data usage.
With this function, we not only enhance sustainability but also enable faster loading times, better accessibility in regions with limited internet connectivity, and a more efficient use of our platform overall.
Further Sustainability Measures
Travels
As the festival wants to maintain its international character, the focus is being placed on reducing flight journeys. The festival team itself has set itself guidelines for travelling as environmentally friendly as possible. We also enter into dialogue with the artists, companies and teams to enable the most environmentally friendly travel possible.
Visual Communication and Digital Sustainability
The festival follows a long-term design concept to avoid unnecessary reprints and material waste. Print products are being reduced while digital formats are being strengthened. Starting in 2025, the festival program book will be discontinued. Instead, the DANCE Newspaper will be launched in April 2025, printed on recyclable newsprint paper.
Social and Economic Sustainability
Sustainability is not just about conserving resources but also about fair economic conditions. The festival pays appropriate fees based on industry-specific guidelines to ensure that artists are not pushed into precarious conditions. Long-term partnerships with organizations that share sustainable values contribute to financial stability.
Sustainability is also a matter of justice and inclusion. DANCE is committed to equal treatment for all people —regardless of gender, origin, or physical limitations.
